OK, fine, so the Phillies aren't exactly lighting up the scoreboard, but hey, at least we'll have a high-powered Eagles offense to look forward to, right?
Starting wide receiver Kevin Curtis has been diagnosed with a sports hernia and will undergo surgery on Thursday. Coach Andy Reid said Curtis will be out “for a while” but is expected to return this season.
“Yeah, he’ll be back for sure,” said Reid, who said a timetable will be determined after the surgery. “They’ve got to go in and see. That’s why I can’t tell you. I’d like to tell you a time on it, but I can’t. I don’t know what time is on it.”
[...]In the meantime, Greg Lewis and Hank Baskett will share time in Curtis’ starting spot.
“We’re going to mix it up,” Reid said.
“It won’t be a threat to what we do. Other guys will have to step up.”
However, one of those other guys is also hurt. The Eagles’ other starting wideout, Reggie Brown, is still nursing a hamstring strain and will not play against New England. Reid said Brown is expected to be ready for Week 1 against St. Louis.
Sorry, but that won't strike fear in the hearts of many opposing defenses. Kevin Curtis will never be mistaken for Jerry Rice, but he was a pretty darn good receiver last season.
So will the Eagles try to do something to upgrade what many pundits already considered a weak receiving corps? Pessimists will say no, citing that head coach/GM Andy Reid is too stuck in his ways to admit upgrading the receivers on the team is necessary, and even the most die-hard of optimists probably wouldn't feel real confident about an acquisition. But, it was interesting how Reid answered questions on the subject:
Asked whether he anticipated bringing in another receiver, Reid said, “No.”
Asked whether he’s considered 36-year-old, 12-year veteran Joe Horn, who was released Tuesday by Atlanta, Reid said, “Not right now, no.”
Asked whether he’s called Arizona about the disgruntled Anquan Boldin, who wants to be traded, Reid said: “I’m not going to get into all that.”
He was all about "no" until the questions came to Boldin, particularly when you consider that the Eagles have been interested in him according to Sal Palontonio.
