In July and August of 2006, Chase Utley thrilled Phillies fans with his 35-game hit streak, which is tied for the tenth longest in baseball history. Now, Utley has another streak going, but it's not just hits, it's homers. Ut' has homered in 5 consecutive games, which is tied for the longest in Phillies history with Bobby Abreu (2005), Mike Schmidt (1979) and Dick Allen (1969). The major league record is 8, set by Ken Griffey, Jr., Dale Long, and Don Mattingly.
Given that his next two games will be played in Coors Field, you have to believe he has a pretty good chance of getting the streak to seven. On Thursday, the Phillies will open a series in Milwaukee against the Brewers.
But Utley is doing more than just hitting homers. He made a great defensive play in the third inning of last night's win over the Rockies and for the season he's hitting .354 and a ridonkulous OPS+ of 214.
If you listen real close, you can almost hear September's MVP chants...
