Richie Ashburn: A Baseball Life

On April 22nd, 2008, the Phillies and the Arts Alliance of America will release a DVD entitled, Richie Ashburn: A Baseball Life.  Below is a trailer, narrarrated by Harry Kalas, just like the DVD itself.

What's interesting to me is the footage of Ashburn playing baseball, I'm not sure, even after all these years, that I've ever seen any before.

Take a look:

More on Ashburn from the archives.

For those many fans who never saw Richie play allow me to tell you that he was a treat. In his prime he could run with any of the latter basestealers like Wills, Brock, etc. They just played differently in the 50's and didn't run as much. No one and I mean no one, covered center field any better...he got to anything that could possibly be caught. I saw him make catches that Mays, Mantle and Snider could never had made. To sit down the line on the third base side at Shibe park and watch Richie sense a triple was high art! He simply flew around second and exploded into third base, dust and blond hair flying.
