Update: Todd Zolecki of the Inquirer says the rumor is entirely false.
The Philadelphia verson of the Metro, you know, the free newspapers that are scattered about SEPTA statons -- it's likely there are a few old ones residing in the depths of your satchel bag, is reporting on a blockbuster Phillies trade rumor:
The latest rumor in their hunt for a good, young arm had the Phillies kicking the tires on Baltimore’s Erik Bedard, the 28-year-old lefty who was third in the AL last season in strikeouts.
Bedard reportedly spurned a three-year contract extension offered by Orioles’ management. According to a baseball source, the Phillies offered Kyle Kendrick, Shane Victorino and a pair of unnamed prospects to net the southpaw. The Phillies do not comment on trade rumors.
The Orioles declined the offer, and given the paucity of available pitching talent these days, they were wise to do so. But, perhaps if the Phils and O's are willing to continue talks, they might reach some common ground. Certainly, it would take another player from the Phillies to make it work.
