Typically, baseball beats football around here, but with all the talk of the Eagles' issues in the red zone during the recent game against the Jets, I asked Derek at Iggles Blog a question about it in the comments section of a great entry he wrote about the Eagles increased use of the run [yes, you read that right, increased].
In baseball, the sabermatricians say there is no such thing as clutch hitting. On most matters, I tend to agree with them, but not this one, I think it does exist, we just haven't figured out a way to measure it.
In terms of football, I would liken red zone efficiency to clutch hitting in baseball. Do you think red zone efficiency is simply a matter of chance/sample size and over time a team will perform exactly the same in the red zone as they do all over the field (similar to what sabermatricians say about clutch hitting), or do you think there is really something to a team having difficulty inside the 20 for a specific reason?
I'm sure he'll have an answer at some point, but in the meantime, anyone have any thoughts?
