While walking from Melograno to Snackbar on Saturday night, I passed by an interesting storefront, Bruce Murray Collection. The historical baseball photos in the window intrigued me, so I made a mental note to investigate further after the evening came to a close.
Murray was a newspaper photographer in Philadelphia, and a gallery of his photographs is found online. One of the more interesting photographs is of Thomas Edison, Connie Mack, and Ty Cobb at the Oakland Athletics spring training site in Fort Myers, Florida, 1927. With Mack pointing skyward and Edison looking in the same direction, you have to assume they were discussing the possibilities and logistics of illuminating ball parks for night games.
The first night game in the major leagues would not be for another eight years, May 24, 1935 at Crosley Field. The Cincinnati Reds hosted our very own Philadelphia Phillies. Given the state of Phillies baseball in the 1930's, this should come as no surprise, but, the Reds were the victors, 2-1. A wonderful set of photographs and and scans of newspaper articles at the time can be found here.
