Several months ago, in May, when the Phillies were winning game after game, but before their mid-season collapse, I got an email from a friend and BS&S.com reader. He said his Army reserve unit was called up, and he was being sent to Iraq. I was struck by his reaction, which wasn't "holy crap, I'm being sent to war, does Acela go to Canada?" but instead it was, "the timing of this could not be worse, the Phillies are just starting to get hot!"
Fortunately, from Iraq, he can occasionally get online and check up on the Phils and once in a while even get a game or two over grainy video. You may have seen his comments here, signed "MPN" or "MPN in Iraq". Today, I received an email from him, subject heading "Fightin Phillies Fanboy" containing this picture [click to enlarge in new window]:
If you look closely, you'll see a red "P" emblazoned on the boonie cap. Here's a closer view:
Call me crazy, but carrying on this sort of Phillies devotion while in Iraq should be worthy of a chance to throw out the first pitch at some run-of-the-mill game in 2007 shouldn't it? Who do we call?
