There are reports that the Phillies are planning on moving broadcaster Larry Anderson to radio work exclusively, and pair Chris Wheeler with Harry Kalas for at least 6 innings of every game.
By taking Harry's favorite partner away from him, and then pairing him with just about everyone's least favorite partner [in particular those who listen to the broadcasts], in the last year of his contract, at age 70, it almost appears as if the Phillies are attempting to force Kalas to retire after this year.
If the Phillies are indeed forcing him out, it is a grave mistake. If they accidentally force him out, it is a grave mistake. After thirty five years in the booth for the Phillies, announcing almost all of the franchise's highlights, shouldn't Kalas have some say in how the broadcasts are structured?
If Kalas is indeed ushered out the door on anything but his own terms, the venom that will be directed towards the organization will dwarf that of the Ed Wade era.
Seriously, what in the world are they thinking? I thought maybe the organization had turned a corner by hiring Pat Gillick, but reports such as this remind me that the same inmates are running the asylum.
Update: via Philling Station, here are the email addresses for Scott Palmer, newly appointed director of media and public affairs [he's off to a great start huh?] and Larry Schenk, team spokesman. Speak up and voice your opinion.
