Subject: Last night's loss
First of all, can someone print this out and give it to Charlie Manuel? I doubt he reads email.
I'm not quite sure about what to say about last night's loss. It was heartbreaking (though I probably don't need to tell you that).
Yesterday I was mad as hell at you guys, but I have to admit that today, while I'm disappointed in you guys, there's a part of me that is proud too. You lost the lead in the sixth, it looked bad, but you came back in the eighth inning and got the lead on a dramatic homer by Bobby Abreu. And it's not the first time I've felt you guys were trying as hard as you could. There were many instances this season when you could have packed it in, and didn't. Eventually, you even got the Wild Card lead and got within just a few games of the impregnable fortress that is the Atlanta Braves in the NL East.
After Bobby's homer, I thought "finally, they're over the hump!" Unfortunately, we all know what happened next.
But really, the purpose of this email isn't to re-hash last night, but to implore you to win on Friday against the Marlins. However, don't win it for me or the other fans, don't win it for yourselves...win it for Harry Kalas.
He was absolutely crestfallen last night. You couldn't see his face, but you could just hear it in his voice. He finished up the top of the ninth with, "All the runs are unearned, but so what," and later, he read the broadcast's closing credits in a lifeless monotone. I mean, "brought to you by W.B. Mason" can't really be delivered in dramatic fashion, but last night, Harry the K was just down.
Look guys, he's not a young man anymore. He's almost 70, and he has been announcing Phillies games for thirty-four years. How much more of these excruciating losses can the man take? After listening to him last night, I get the distinct feeling that it is a finite number.
So take Thursday off, play some golf, take the kids to the park, come by my place and drink some scotch...Whatever, but just forget about baseball. Then, come back on Friday and kick some fish tail. Win one for Harry. Please.
Your phan,
TGPS- Almost forgot, I've got some things to say directly to some of you...
...Wags - I caught your interview on Daily News Live before last night's game. I agree withh you, there are a lot of people that are happy that the Phils are struggling and I don't get it either. I love the Eagles too, but I'm not ready for nights with meaningless baseball, much less no baseball at all.
... David Bell - All that nice stuff I said above? It goes for everyone except you and the shortstop. There were two outs! Catch the ball! Go sit in the corner with TSWWRN.
