Link: ESPN.com - MLB - Report: Dykstra took steroids, involved in gambling.
Lenny Dykstra, a key cog in the New York Mets World Series title in 1986 and the Philadelphia Phillies National League pennant in 1993, is being accused of steroid use and illegal gambling, the Los Angeles Times reported.
Great. Just great. I guess this will help us forget about the nice little losing streak the Phillies have going on right now.
First, the allegations relating to gambling...From these reports, it isn't clear whether or not Dykstra ever gave less than his full effort to win games. But, as I've said before in the case of Pete Rose, any level of participation with gambling on baseball is grounds for banishment. Obviously this warrants investigation by MLB.
Regarding the steroids allegations, they follow the pattern of nearly every other case we've heard to this point. Once again, the accuser is a person of questionable credibility (i.e. jaded business partner and/or convicted criminal) and the accused is a person who was often rumored to be a steroid user...yada yada. And, as usual, fans are left to wonder what the truth really is and hope that time will provide some clarity.
Why do I have the feeling we are due for one of these formulaic scenarios every few months?
