To paraphrase Allen Iverson, I'm talkin' 'bout access...
For some time now, those of us in the Phillies blog-circuit have wondered what we could do with press passes. What if we had access to the team? Imagine what kinds of things would get posted on Shallow Center, Swing and a Miss, The Philling Station, The Berks Phillies Fan, and A Citizen's Blog (and oh yeah, this space too) if we had the chance to walk up to Jim Thome in front of his locker and ask him whatever we wanted.
For most of us, it's a small fantasy, creeping into our heads as we sit in traffic or wait in line at Starbucks, the type of thing that we know would never happen, but, is fun to think about anyway. Since we aren't restrained by the need to sell copies or advertising, we could branch off into topics that the (I hate to use the cliche-ed term) mainstream-media can't because of it's typical print or broadcast format.
Well, it seems that we may get to find out what it would be like, but unfortunately not first-hand.
Enter Philly Baseball Blog, a group of authors who describe the site as, "Written anonymously by the Philly media and baseball experts who want to tell it like is!" Since they are writing anonymously on a blog, rather than in a newspaper with a byline, they will be free to explore different ideas and formats without the constraints imposed by their employers.
Inevitably, there will be speculation on the identities of the authors ("is it Conlin? Hayes? how do we even know they are in the media?") but I for one am actually more interested in the types of insight we can get from someone with (allegedly) access.
