Subject: Phillies offense
Mr. Hayes,
Ever since your spring training coverage began, you've been pointing to the Phillies offense as the culprit behind the team's underacheivment over the last few seasons. I think this analysis is incorrect.
The Phillies offense ranked third in the NL in runs scored on the road (which negates ballpark effects) in 2004 and 2003, and fourth in 2002. Certainly, this production is adequate for a championship caliber team. Conversely, the Phillies ERA on the road ranked 12th in 2004, 8th in 2003, and 11th in 2002 in the National League.
Thank you.
Cordially,
An Informed Phan
